Common Questions
When first introduced to chiropractic, the philosophy may seem overwhelming. In reality, chiropractic is very simple. Here are some questions we get asked everyday and the answers simply put. As always, our goal is to educate and empower.
What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a natural method of health care that focuses on treating the cause of physical problems, rather than just treating the symptoms.
What is a subluxation?
The body is under the control of the brain and nervous system for life. The brain is protected by the skull and the nervous system is protected by the spine. Spinal bones move out of normal alignment and interrupt your normal nerve flow. This is called subluxation. Subluxations can cause many problematic symptoms.
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
Chiropractors locate subluxations (nerve interference) and remove them by performing a specific spinal adjustment. Chiropractic adjustments restore function to the spine and nervous system. With a normally functioning spine and nervous system, the body is able to perform at 100% and is self-sustaining and self-healing.
Who can benefit from chiropractic?
Every person, at any age, can benefit from chiropractic care.
Common symptoms of a subluxated spine in adults:
-Headaches/Migraines -Ear/Sinus Infections -Allergies/Congestion -Stiff Neck & Shoulders -Back Pain -Digestive Issues -Immune Deficiency -Difficulty Sleeping -Menstrual Problems -Infertility -High Blood Pressure -Sciatica -Fibromyalgia
*Even if symptoms are not present, the body may still not be performing optimally. It is always a good idea, and a common health practice, to be checked regularly for subluxation. Just as you would have your teeth checked regularly by a dentist, your spine should be checked regularly by a chiropractor.
Pediatric Chiropractic Common Questions
We’re kid friendly! Dr. Blake sees many “chiro-kids” in his practice everyday. Chiropractic’s gentle, drug free, and preventative approach to good health is perfectly appropriate for infants, children, and teenagers.
When should I take my child to a Chiropractor?
It is important to have a chiropractic exam during the first year of a child’s life as subluxations can occur during birth, as well as from tumbles while learning to sit up or walk. Improper lifting and carrying can also contribute to spinal stress.
Your child’s spine grows almost 50% in length during the first year. This is equivalent to a six-footer growing to nine feet in just 12 months! It’s this kind of tremendous growth and developmental changes which make a complete chiropractic examination so important in the early stages of a child’s life.
How safe is chiropractic for a child?
Chiropractic is one of the safest forms of children’s health care. Dr. Blake does not adjust a baby or a child the same way as he would adjust an adult. A baby’s spine is very supple during the first few months of life, so only slight pressure is needed to make an adjustment. For older children whose spine is still made of mainly cartilage, slight pressure followed by a gentle push is all that is required to put the vertebra back in place.
Common symptoms of a subluxated spine in infants and children:
-Colic -Reflux -Irritable Baby Syndrome -Breast Feeding Difficulties -Ear Infections -Allergies -Asthma -Constipation -Sleeping Difficulties -Headaches -Immune Deficiency
The sooner subluxation is detected and removed, the better. This reduces the risk of your child developing chronic and serious symptoms.
